OUR SCHOOL IS 40!
On this day 40 years ago, Holy Child School opened for the first time.

On 1st September 1980, the school opened to 239 pupils. There were 7 teachers employed - Patricia Kennelly (Principal), Teresa Callaghan (Deputy Principal), Joan Boland, Susan Woods, Noreen Lynch, Gerry Moore and Bridget Greaney. There were no ancillary staff such as a secretary or caretaker.

The first morning began with all the children and their parents gathered in the hall. There were no microphones so Ms Kennelly had to stand on a table and call out names of children for each class. As the day progressed it was discovered that there were only 100 chairs in the school for the 239 pupils. Those who went to the toilet lost their seat and had to sit on the floor! Delivery of furniture took the entire 1980/1981 school year.

There were no school uniforms for the first two years and the children got one hour for lunch each day.

Fr. John Shorthall was responsible for overseeing the building of the school and was appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Management. Teachers, parents, members of the Board of Management and volunteers worked extremely hard to get Holy Child School up and running and this great work continues today by the countless number of people who help to make the school the great educational establishment it is today. We currently have 37 staff and 472 pupils in the school.

We have a number of staff members who were past pupils of the school and also many present students have parents and family members who are past pupils and it is great to see the connection to the school being passed down through generations.
